3c. Engaging students in learning
While watching a video of original choreography from the performance of Alvin Ailey’s Revelations followed by Martha Graham’s Diversion of Angels, students identify the effort qualities seen in each video in a Venn Diagram chart, comparing and contrasting the qualities used and answering the open ended question once finished. Once the chart is filled out, students engage in a group discussion based on their findings and answers.
3d. Using assessment in instruction
This checklist is used to assess students while they are working in a small group and performing a solo phrase. This checklist allows me to informally assess each student’s understanding of the material while I circulate around the room.
This is a self- assessment students can use once they created a group piece and have videotaped the choreography before performing for the whole class. Students can identify their own strengths and weaknesses in their work as well as create a plan to revise their choreography based on the given criteria.
